Are you curious to find out how issues such as workload, leadership, collaboration, social safety and professional culture play a part in the day-to-day running of schools? If so, this work placement is for you.

Practical information:

• Period: starting in October or November 2026
• Duration: 10 weeks
• Scope: around 20–24 hours per week (2 to 3 days)
• Location: Utrecht, less than a 10-minute cycle from the Science Park
• Education Sciences student, Bachelor’s degree

At DUO-Onderwijs, we carry out staff surveys for primary and secondary schools. These surveys provide insights into areas such as educational vision, collaboration, communication, leadership, workload, social safety and a culture of learning.

During your work placement, you will develop a digital knowledge base for our researchers and advisers. This knowledge base will help them to better interpret research findings and support schools with evidence-based insights, practical tools and proven approaches.

Your responsibilities will include, amongst other things:

• collect and evaluate academic literature, practical examples and resources;
• to investigate which interventions and approaches are appropriate for specific research findings;
• organising knowledge around themes from the employee survey;
• translating scientific insights into practical information for school leaders, HR staff and teaching teams;
• contribute ideas on how this knowledge can be made accessible to both colleagues and schools.

In doing so, you will be making a tangible contribution to the development of schools and to the further professionalisation of our consultancy practice.

You’ll be undertaking an internship at DUO-Onderwijs in Utrecht, an independent research and consultancy firm with a unique focus on education. We work with schools, school boards, educational organisations, publishers, knowledge centres and public authorities. Our mission is simple: together, we strengthen schools.

For over 30 years, we have been supporting schools with research, advice and practical solutions. Our team consists of researchers, educational experts and consultants who work on a daily basis to address issues relating to educational quality, job satisfaction, leadership and school development.

During this work placement, you will gain an insight into the work of educational researchers outside schools and universities.

You will develop skills in the following areas:

• literature review in educational research;
• evidence-informed working;
• analysing issues relating to workload, leadership, collaboration and school culture;
• translating research into practical advice for schools;
• knowledge management and the design of a digital knowledge environment;
• working professionally as part of a research and consultancy firm.

You will also gain an understanding of how research data is used to support school development.

By the end of the work placement, you will have:

• developed a functional digital knowledge base covering at least five themes from the staff survey;
• drawn up a well-founded overview of the sources used and the selection criteria;
• practical guidance has been developed for advisers and schools;
• provided the team with a set of management and user instructions.
